Nerja, the coastal gem of the Axarquia, is right on the Mediterranean shoreline at the foothills of the Sierra De Tejada mountains, about thirty miles east of Malaga on the Costa Del Sol, and about forty minutes drive from the Airport (on the N340 motorway), it has beautiful sandy beaches, impressive mountain scenery and is untouched by high rise developments. With its mild climate you can enjoy yourself to the full all year round and take advantage of the relaxed way of life of a town that still retains much of the character of its Moorish past.
Nerja has a choice of beaches, Burriana, Calahonda, Torrecilla and Salon. The most popular is the Burriana where you will find plenty of places to eat lunch or enjoy an evening meal. All the usual water sports including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing are available. From Burriana beach to the town runs a coastal path with fantastic views. Following the winding path brings you into the town where you will find the famous Balcon de Europa. The Balcon, formerly a XI Century castle, it is now a viewing point above the sea with panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below. This is the place to be at night where people promenade after a wonderful meal. You can either sit and watch with a nice cool drink, take a tour of the town by horse & trap or have your portrait drawn by one of the street Artists. Adjacent to the Balcon is the beautiful 17th century El Salvador Church constructed in Baroque-Mudejar style, where religious festivals such as Holy week (Easter) and Festival of San Juan and Carmen Day are celebrated in their own special way. Another event of particular note is the acclaimed Nerja Caves Festival which takes place amongst Stalactites and Stalagmites that were formed millions of years ago. NerjaCaves are currently the third most visited monument in the whole of Spain.
Nerja has managed to keep a lot of it's character, particularly the old part of town with narrow cobbled streets and Tapas Bars, small shops offering local produce of the area, including sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. There is also a wide range of international restaurants which offer a variety of menus to suit all tastes.
Lovers of the open air can enjoy the wonderful countryside in the area. Sierra Nevada (Europe's most Southerly Ski resort) is only two hours drive from Nerja so you can ski in the morning and be on the beach in the afternoon! For those who seek alternative activities, there is fishing, canoeing, hiking, cycling, horse riding and parascending and of course there is golf at Añoreta golf course which is twenty minutes drive & Baviera golf course even closer.
Nerja has something for everyone, but don’t tell everyone!! Just enjoy our little secret!
